1. Windows 7 64 bit
2. VMWare 6.5. Note: Virtual PC 2007 cannot install Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit limitation)
Installation
1. Install VMWare Workstation. (I am using version 6.5)
2. Install Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit).
- Install .Net 3.5 SP1.
- Turn off Windows Firewall.
- Install the Active Directory Domain Services role.
- I also prefer to turn off the IE 8 protected mode:
3. Install Sql Server 2008 (64 bit)

4. Download the Sharepoint 2010 Beta
5. Install the hotfix for SPS 2010 beta
6. Install Sharepoint 2010
Choose Server Farm
Ensure that a domain account is supplied
If you get this error message, browse to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967909 or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970315 and apply the hotfix.
7. Install Office 2010 Beta
8. Install Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. Please refer to earlier post if you get the screen below.
** Update **
I mistakenly installed the wrong version (Standard versus Enterprise), presumably by entering the wrong product key. My experience is documented here.
