I have a brand new DELL Inspiron 1525 and have loaded Windows Vista Ultimate on it. It was working fine for 4 days, until it started downloading updates via Windows
Now it fails to boot up with the following symptoms:
- I get a message saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem:
- 1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer. Choose your language settings and click next.
- 2. Click "repair your computer"
- 3. It also gives me the following options:
- 4. Safe Mode
- 5. Safe Mode with networking
- 6. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
- 7. Last known good configuration
- 8. Start Windows normally
- 4. Safe Mode
- 1. When I attempt to proceed using options 4-6, the screen turns black and just hangs there.
- 2. If I choose option 6, I also get a list of loaded files. The last loaded file message says: ... Loaded \Windows\system32\drivers\volmgrx.sys Loaded \Windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys Loaded \Windows\system32\drivers\ataport.sys Loaded \Windows\system32\drivers\msahci.sys Loaded \Windows\system32\drivers\fltmgr.sys Loaded \Windows\system32\drivers\fileinfo.sys" [Please wait...]
- 3. I tried booting it with the Vista DVD inserted. It prompts me to choose an OS to start and displays "Microsoft Windows Vista" as the choice. Upon pressing ENTER, it takes me to Step 1.
- 4. I changed the boot sequence to boot up from the Dvd drive. It starts up the Windows installation upon reboot. Upon getting the Vista menu, I choose to Repair my computer.
- 5. A message comes up that says: "Windows found problems with your computer's startup options. Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer?" I click on "Repair and restart".
- 6. Step 1 shows up again. I choose 8. Start Windows normally.
- 7. The screen shows the Vista icon and Windows Vista starts up ok.
- 8. I turned off windows Updates and rebooted the computer and it starts up ok.
From the comments below, a lot of people are complaining that they do not have the Windows installation disks from their sellers. A lot of sellers do not give out the Windows disks nowdays. The good news is that you can create a system recovery disk directly from Windows and burn it to a DVD in case your OS crashes. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open Backup and Restore by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Backup and Restore.
- In the left pane, click Create a system repair disc, and then follow the steps. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
If you're prompted to insert a Windows installation disc, it means that the files needed to create the system repair disc can't be found on your computer. Insert a Windows 7 installation disc.
To use the system repair disc- 1.Insert the system repair disc into your CD or DVD drive.
- 2. Restart your computer using the computer's power button.
- 3. If prompted, press any key to start the computer from the system repair disc.
- 4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
- 5. Select a recovery option, and then click Next.
If your computer isn't configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You might need to change your computer's BIOS settings.
Thanks! I hope this works for me too! - cherry, philippines

I had the same problem with the Dell Inspiron and tried everything but it would not 'Repair.' So I changed the boot sequence, re-booted from the OS disk (using the install disk from Dell) and it worked. I had to go to a full clean install which wipes out all data and previously installed programs but it's back up and running. It took close to an hour but it's working. Is Windows 7 almost here?
ReplyDeleteany others solution?

ReplyDelete"Will this method still preserve my data?? just curious and also can i corrupt my files.... and a last question.... what to do if i cant access my hard drive but i want its data...."
ReplyDeleteThere are no gurantees that your data will be preserved. You should only do this as a last resort.
If you want to backup your data first, then you will need to take out your hard disk, attach it to a USB hard disk enclosure and connect it to the USB port of another computer where it will appear as another drive and allow you to copy your data files.
Hey i had a similar issue to this, um when i go to start repair (recommended) then it tells me it can not automatically switch i click on go to advanced restore options, then i click on system restore, and although it seems like its bugged or nothing is happening if you just wait like 10-15 mins or so it pops up with a restore point, just use the latest restore point to minimise loss of data.
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me :D i thought i was going to have to by a new Hard disk...
The issue seemed to have been with a download of mine that i made, and maybe a combination of me holding down the power off button during what seemed to be a crucial time for the system.
where is the exact answer to solve the problem?
ReplyDeleteI attempted the above listed repairs, got a message stating that the repairs were completed and if there were any other errors the repairs would start over. If not, then the computer would start as it normally does. Unfortunately, it had another error and the repairs restarted after a few minutes I got this error message "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically" and gave me an option to send an error report to MS or to shut down. I shut down and attempted to restart but now I get past the the screen that shows the drivers that are loading but after that I get a black screen with just the pointer. This happens on both the normal and safe start. This all happened when I clicked on "System Restore" in the start menu and got impatient while it was loading and did a hard shut down. Can anyone help. I am a novice so please excuse me if my terminology or descriptions are awkward. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy computer does not start up. It's an acer aspire with windows 7. When I turn it on it says something like windows failed to start due to a hardware change. I follow the recommended directions my computer says to do but windows failed to recover. Why does my computer do this and what can i do to fix it?!!! Help, I just got it!!!!!
ReplyDeletehow do i eject my disc? it wont lemme eject to put in installation disc?
ReplyDelete@Nick Stewart,
ReplyDeleteTake your computer off the power supply before you do this. There is a little pinhole in the DVD drive for manual ejection. Straighten a paper clip and insert into it to eject the disk manually. (Disclaimer: Use at your own risk, no responsibility accepted).
..encountered the exact problem stated above and when i try to follow the troubleshooting procedures, it doesn't work in my laptop? is there any alternative solution to this concern? what could be the possible problem of laptop?
ReplyDeleteI've tried rebooting in Safe Mode, last good configuration and by starting windows normally but it keeps taking me back to the BSOD. There's no option to select "system restore". How can I re-install Windows when I have a Toshiba Satellite with no Optical Disk Drive????? Please help.
ReplyDeleteHelena,
ReplyDeleteYou will need a DVD drive to perform your restore. If you do not have one, you can purchase a USB one from Amazon, Best Buy, etc
turn off your usb ports in your bios and see if that helps i just had the same thing on a asus motherboard and i turned off the usb ports and was able to load windows 7
ReplyDeletethe Easiest i got through this with an HP notepook is by shutting it off and hitting f2 for start up something it gives you different options the last one being F11 SYSTEM RESTORE go into that and that should take care of it
ReplyDeletei dont have an instalation disc so what do i do??
ReplyDeletei have dell studio xps, my instalation disc did not load. pls help
ReplyDeleteEvery single option I've read just takes me back to the "Windows Error Recovery" Screen
ReplyDeleteI only have two options:
Launch Startup Repair
Start Windows Normally
Everything I do just takes me back to this page
